Are you or someone you care for looking to stop smoking? Do you find that you have had a few failed attempts? Maybe you have listened to advice from others who have quit successfully or read and spent time preparing for the right mind-set for that quit. All this helps you with an arsenal of information against cigarettes.

You may have heard a friend say they were really craving a cigarette but will not smoke. This is a difficult concept for many to grasp. Surely the craving is a need to smoke? How can you ignore a craving? Maybe you have tried to ignore cravings in the past, it was really hard, and then one day, you just gave in. Or maybe temptation just came out of the blue. There are many ways of tackling this challenge. You can for example, become stubborn and hold strong against cravings, or you can rebel against the cigarettes, or you can release the emotions behind the cravings. There is a mind-set of embracing each crave and accepting it, observing it and just riding the wave. This is facilitated in Emotional Freedom Techniques, by first accepting psychologically that you have a craving, and then using special quick-releasing acupressure to let go of it. And Whatever tactic you use, you can be comforted by the fact that it gets easier as you go along.

You may have also heard that you can take one day, one hour, or one moment at a time. This avoids the hope that you can leave quitting till tomorrow, for example, because you are not considering tomorrow, you are living in the now – this moment is all that matters. Doing Emotional Freedom Techniques, meditation, or reading The Power of Now are a great help for building the one moment at a time mind-set.

Really, understanding stop smoking psychology leads to amazing insights. For example, you may well ask why when there is no nicotine left in the body that people still crave so badly. You may well ask if smoking is just a habit. The habit is to use the nicotine as a de-stressor, for example, as a mechanism for feeling full after a meal, as a way to enjoy a social occasion with confidence, as a way to drink alcohol or caffeine without feeling overwhelmed. The trick is to find another mechanism to de-stress and to cope with all the usual smoking triggers, and then there is no need to smoke. This is why meditation, Emotional Freedom Techniques, Reiki, prayer, and support have been cited as useful; these methods help you release what the cigarettes used to release for you (or those you care for).

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT for short) is a very quick and easy way to get rid of smoking cravings and have an easier quit. It involves a mixture of clever wording and easy acupressure to help you move forward with ease. You can download a free EFT guide from many online resources. Or you can get stuck right in and see an experienced practitioner or attend a local workshop.

If you are from a country where people do not smoke on a table in the pub or restaurant outside, it may come as a surprise to go on holiday somewhere like South Africa or Mexico and see people relaxed outside on al-fresco restaurant tables smoking. Or maybe you are in a country where it is acceptable to smoke at tables outside, and it is just a normal part of life where you are. This may be a smoking trigger to you or may be a nuisance, depending on whether you are a smoker or not.

For many ex-smokers and non-smokers, the smell of cigarettes as they walk past can be totally disgusting. And many a non-smoker may wonder if they themselves used to inconvenience others in the same way, with the realization that they must have smelled the same. Of course it is not a matter of smell per se but the stuff that you are breathing in against your wishes that makes it so unpleasant. I live in Cape Town and personally hold my breath when I see that cigarette, and I try to walk as far away from the outdoor tables as possible. But then, I have smokers lung, and I have ended up in hospital once when I had to endure a party where everyone smoked non-stop outside.

For some ex-smokers, the whiff of the cigarettes takes them right back into cravings-land. Some people even deliberately breathe it in as the nearest they would allow themselves to get to smoking without actually starting up the habit of lighting up themselves again. Others may notice how relaxed the smokers at the tables look, sitting in the sun with friends, looking happy, and smoking together. That can make the thought of smoking very attractive and relaxing, bringing up those cravings of just one, just here, just this once. Of course, it never is just this once.

However, if you have stopped smoking and still get the occasional craving like that, it is best to release it rather than leave it as a potential time-bomb waiting to happen. It would be such a shame if your years of being a happy ex-smoker came to an abrupt end because of one moment of weakness that you were simply not expecting. There are many techniques you can use, such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), hypnosis, or NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), to name a few. It would be nice to pass those tables and feel neutral, wouldn´t it?

If you are trying to stop smoking, it is good to take the time to ask yourself why you want to quit. And I know that to you, it may seem obvious, but you would be surprised to discover that the why can control your chances of success.

There is a kind of statement beginning with ¨When I¨. Here are a few examples.

When I make more money, I will no longer worry.

When I get a new job, I will be free.

When I stop smoking, my partner will stop nagging me.

When I give up smoking, my husband will buy me that car he is promising.

When I go on holiday, I will be able to relax.

When I stop smoking, my boyfriend will be kind to me and will propose.

When I quit smoking, my wife, who earns more than me, will respect me.

When I lose weight, I will find someone who loves me.

When I give up smoking, I will not be so anxious about the possibility of a heart attack or stroke.

When I give up smoking, I will no longer worry about getting lung cancer and leaving my children orphaned.

So basically, we tell ourselves that once we have that thing that we need, then we will be happy. However, there are many happy people the world over who are very poor, never go on holiday, or never get a new job. That is because happiness is a state of being, rather than a state dependent on a particular achievement.

There are two ways of giving up smoking. One way involves at least some help to resolve the underlying emotional reasons, and another way does not. Do not get me wrong here; I am not suggesting that you have to spend money or see someone in order to stop smoking, there is also self-help. So let me explain more about the ¨When I¨ driver for stopping smoking. When we reach our goal of giving up smoking by going cold turkey, medication, or habit modification, we are happy for a while, but then there is something else we find ourselves needing. You may know of people who stopped smoking but gained weight overeating, or who became so irritable, they went back to smoking, or who one day out of the blue, picked up a cigarette and started all over again. But when they first stopped, they were happy. They had this great few months of feeling great. What happened? The reason is that we have not solved the root cause behind the need to stop smoking. So we think that stopping smoking will make us happy, but after the initial euphoria subsides, we are on the lookout for something again.

Time and time again, I have had clients come to me for stopping smoking just because their partner wanted it. And I usually weed them out, but some do slip through. My suspicion is that they genuinely tell themselves that they want to give up because of their own reasons, and for a while make themselves believe it. But this has a great deal of inherent problems. For someone who is a non-smoker to fall in love with a smoker and then insist that they stop, there is a problem. The non-smoker in that relationship for some reason fell in love with someone they find repugnant. It is good to ask why, what has gone wrong in the non-smoking partner´s life to cause them to seek out relationships with people they are incompatible with? And the smoker in that relationship is making a big lifestyle change only in order to keep the relationship. It is good to ask what has gone so wrong in the smoker´s life that they allow themselves to be controlled so strongly by their partner? There is a problem in the relationship dynamic here, and time after time, I find that either the smoker is not ready to stop as yet, or that the couple break up. It is not always so clear-cut, and there are many respectful non-smokers that ask their partners to stop; for example, if they are planning to have children soon.

Most people come to me to stop smoking because they are aware that if they continue, they will have heart attacks, strokes, and may get cancer of the lung, throat, or some other painful way of an early demise. And that is the norm. However, for some people, they are anxious that they may die of a smoking-related illness, and think to themselves that when they stop smoking, they will be safe from the diseases that terrify them. Can you see the difference here? One smoker is simply aware of the dangers of continuing smoking and is making a decision to change. Another smoker is terrified and anxious about the consequences of continuing smoking, and is driven not by a desire to be healthy but the need to avoid the terror situation of serious disease and death. Chances are that the latter smoker has some anxiety, whether diagnosed or not. What this person needs is to address the anxiety or nervousness. Simply stopping smoking will not last, because as the person´s anxiety returns after the initial no-smoking euphoria, the easiest and quickest way that person knows how to cope is to have a cigarette. And then the whole thing starts all over again.

Maybe you can ask yourself, what is the feeling you are trying to achieve by stopping smoking? Do you feel that you will be lovable or safe when you have lost the weight? In that case, are you not actually at some level thinking that you are unlovable or unsafe as you are? The fact is that when you love yourself and forgive yourself and anyone else involved in whatever hurts you have suffered, you will have resolved the underlying reasons to smoking, and you will no longer need to medicate yourself with cigarettes or anything else instead. EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a great way to work on any emotional block in your path. Or if EFT is not for you, you can use EMDR, NLP, or whatever works for you.

So, ask yourself, what do you want to achieve by stopping smoking? If it is at least partly that you want to be loved or safe, this is exactly what you can work on to ensure that you are quitting for the right reasons. Because when you do, the results can last. And that is wonderful in every way.

EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a great tool that helps you help yourself. It is used for almost any physical or emotional condition. And it works relatively quickly. Because of that, and because professionals using it want to encourage others to use it, it is mainly the stories about fast recovery that abound on the internet and in the press. For example, most ex-smokers that I have helped in the UK to quit did so in one session with EFT and did not need to use EFT for smoking again; and I wrote about it to encourage others to quit. This leaves some users disappointed, as they think that the EFT is not working and give up. For example, about 70% quit in one session and 30% came back for more sessions. There was nothing wrong with the 30%. Not at all. They just had more blocks in their path that we needed to remove with EFT, and that´s perfectly OK.

Let me give an analogy. Most of us have used headache pills or powders at various points in our lives. And most people have a bottle or box of pain-relief pills in their home. The reason is that we might need them. And in that case, we might just pop a pill and the pain would go away and we would just get on with whatever it is we need to do. And I know that for a lot of us who prefer holistic alternative health, popping pills is not the answer, but hey, there were times when I have just wanted a pill and so took one. What I am trying to say is that as a society, we think nothing of taking a pill for a headache or other pain if needed. And that we do so because it works. We know it works, because the pain goes away, and then we can get on with our lives.

Let me show you this from a slightly different angle. We take a pill for a headache, and it makes the headache go away, and we accept that. And even though that particular headache is gone, we still keep a stock of pills available. And we never even question why. It is obvious; we keep a stock of pain-relief tablets in case we get another pain later that we need to quickly get rid of. And that, realistically speaking, is OK. We are happy with that.

But let me ask you about another scenario. We get a physical or emotional pain, use EFT on it, and it goes away. Some people then become very surprised if that pain comes back, and then say the EFT did not work. But they are still happy to take a painkiller, even though they have taken many before in their life and the pain came back!

And just like the pain tablets do work, so does EFT!

Additionally, just like the pain may re-appear or a different pain may appear, we think nothing of taking another pain-killer. And so we should think nothing of using EFT again either!

Now, I am neither advocating taking pain-killers nor pushing doing EFT instead of taking a pain-killer. What I am saying here is look at the way we happily consider pain-killers effective, even though we may have to take them again on another occasion, and that we should look at EFT in the same light. Despite whatever anyone promises you about EFT, yes, most of the things that are said about its quickness and effectiveness are totally true, but it is a tool that can be used over and over again for many physical and emotional issues, and it is OK to keep using it on one issue for a few months before a more permanent solution is found. And even then, we are continually exposed to emotional hurt and physical mishaps, so it makes sense that we continue using EFT in our lives; just like most of us use that handy headache tablet.

EFT is a great way to release the vast majority of physical or emotional conditions gently and effectively. If it is new to you, you can download a free guide from many online resources and find out more for yourself. Or you can dive right in and work with an experienced practitioner.

Stopping smoking is the probably the best way to preserve and even improve your looks. Smokers typically have deeply lined faces after 40. Compared to non-smokers, it is a stark difference.

And if this is what smoking is doing to the outside, can you imagine what it is doing to your insides?

Cigarette smoke that is inhaled causes lung cancer, sinus problems and chronic obstructive lung disease. Smoking increases your chance of stroke and heart attack. Smoking causes smoking-related illnesses in other people that you force to share your smoke, like Roy Castle, a great comedian who died of lung cancer, killed by his audiences.

But there is an easy solution that can help you quit, starting the next few minutes. It is based on a mixture of specific wording and self-applied acupressure, to help you quit without feeling you are giving up anything. This technique is my own adaptation of EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques. It really should be renamed Smoking Freedom Techniques!
Stop Smoking EFT, Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy, and Eating Control - Many modern hypnotists are now combining traditional stop smoking hypnosis or hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Techniques for emotional triggers, as well as advice about eating habits, nutrition, and treatment to stop the need to overeat once the client stops smoking. Every hypnotist using additional modern techniques is finding their own combination that works for their clients. More→

Many modern hypnotists are now combining traditional stop smoking hypnosis or hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Techniques for emotional triggers, as well as advice about eating habits, nutrition, and treatment to stop the need to overeat once the client stops smoking. And some hypnotists are fond of calling smoking just a habit, whilst others may call it a kind of addiction. Every hypnotist using additional modern techniques is finding their own combination that works for their clients.

I feel it is important first of all to address the issue of calling smoking habit or addiction. I have recently been reading up on Habit versus Addiction and it seems that semantics are getting in the way. When I was in my early twenties, a long time ago, it was recognized that there was what was called ¨psychological addiction¨, in other words, the emotional need for a substance. Now, the psychologists do not like using the word ¨addiction¨ it seems unless there was a big ¨physical¨ withdrawal such as in the case of a heroin addict going cold turkey. Now I use the words ¨need¨ or ¨desire¨ to avoid making it just a habit. You see, what a psychologist calls a habit is not what the layman calls a habit. The originator of EFT expressed it very eloquently in one of his DVDs. He said if he had a habit of putting his right shoe on before his left shoe, then that is a habit, and all he needed to change it is put a note by his shoes reminding him to put the left shoe on first, and he would simply do it. But he asked members of the audience, if a smoker can simply stop smoking by leaving a note on their cigarettes reminding them not to smoke, and successfully quit the habit. The audience said no, and he explained that it is because there are emotional reasons why a smoker smokes.

But I am a holistic healer and a scientist and seriously challenge anyone to tell me exactly where the physical ends and the emotional begins and prove it. The problem I find for the client with this arbitrary distinction between addiction and habit is that the client then tries to convince themselves that they need to change habits rather than address the emotional reasons why they smoke. That is, a habit as perceived in layman´s terms, not habit as psychologists call what a layman calls a ¨psychological addiction¨. So then one has to address overeating, and this is because the emotional reasons behind the smoking simply get transferred to another destructive activity, that of overeating. But hypnosis is very popular and lucrative, and no matter what we do to persuade the client to stop smoking from the root, they want the perceived magic of trance and are willing to pay more for it, rather than face their emotions in the waking state and release them relatively faster with EFT. What to do? I mix the two when the client wants. But my heart is warmed every time someone quits smoking from the root and holistically changes their life for the better. Hence my preferred stop smoking solution is EFT and a bit of NLP plus some basic holistic health education. We did it at the London EFT clinic I was running, and very successfully – it was EFT-only for most people.

Talking about location, I also am finding the local culture has a lot to do with it. For example, in the UK where I started, people were educated by the government not to skip breakfast, and that if they waited till the afternoon to start eating, they would get ravenous and likely to overeat, as well as needing the breakfast to kick-start their metabolism. Here in South Africa, where I now live, most people are totally ignorant of this and many force themselves to go without food till the evening. No prizes for guessing the favourite method of hunger control! Many people think the body does not need food during the day, and so they are ignorant of what hunger actually is, that they call hunger a need to smoke. They have never tried to give their bodies the nutrition it is so strongly asking for. Instead, when they get that feeling that other people call hunger, this type of smoker thinks that it means they have to have a cigarette. This is because cigarettes drug away the feeling of hunger. And this type of smoker is either underweight or is so used to eating one meal a day that they are used to packing it full of energy and do not realize they have to make changes to it when they start addressing the genuine need for eating. Those who were underweight are usually terrified when they start becoming a normal weight. They had been so used to being too thin that they identify as that person. so work needs to be done on the disordered eating, identity, and everything else around it.

This is why I find stop smoking treatment with EFT so satisfying. One holistically heals everything behind the smoking, and when it is all healed, the smoker then simply stops and feels no need to ever smoke again.

U.K. Regulator Warns About Chantix and Suicide

There’s a new development around Pfizer’s smoking-cessation drug Chantix and suicide: The United Kingdom’s drug regulator has issued an update linking the medicine to reports of “depression and suicide related events.”

Documents posted by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency give the following advice: “Patients who are taking [Chantix] who develop suicidal thoughts or who develop agitation, depressed mood, or changes in behaviour that are of concern for the doctor patient, family, or caregiver should stop their treatment and contact their doctor immediately.”

What I’d like to know is why give a drug addict another drug instead of just removing the reasons for the drug addiction? In my experience, that is far easier, less costly, and more beneficial to the recipient. Cigarette addiction is like any other addiction, and the main causes are emotional, even if you don’t realize that at first. Now there are simple and relatively painless ways to removing those pesky negative emotional blocks in your path, and you could do it from as little as one session. Time and time again, in the stop-smoking session, my client and I reach a point where there is no cigarette craving whatsoever, and this continues the next day, and so on. Surely if cigarettes caused a physical addiction, this would not be the case? And for every client convinced that this was a physical phenomenon, I was able to show that by removing the emotional element, somehow the physical part went away. So why have a dangerous physical intervention? It makes no sense. I am certainly not anti-drug and definitely not anti-pharmaceuticals, as everything has its place. It just is not in my experience that a stop-smoking drug is needed.

Yours sincerely,
