<p>I often have to postpone a client&#8217;s appointment due to impossible business pressures. This person is a busy business person. They put business appointments on a higher priority than their stop-smoking appointments. But it does not end there. You see, most of us would put work as a priority, because there is too much at stake messing around with our work. With this type of person, they put business appointments so much first and foremost that instead of scheduling a new business appointment around their scheduled stop-smoking appointment, they panic and cancel their stop-smoking appointment. Maybe you are wondering why this person does not schedule an appointment after work or on a weekend. I have wondered this too, many a time. It seems, from the answers I get, that this busy person is so constantly<strong> stressed</strong> by work, that when their very long work-day finally finishes, they are not willing to sacrifice any of their me-time or time with their family, not even for a<strong> life-saving</strong> appointment. In other words, this person is so constantly stressed out that it is no wonder they need to take a drug like nicotine in order to cope with life.</p>
<p><strong>The only way this person can give up smoking is to work out new strategies to reduce stress in their life. As long as they insist that they need to keep up these unnecessary stress levels, they will really struggle to quit smoking.</strong></p>
<p>There may be limiting beliefs about hard work that underlie all this stressful lifestyle. For example, the principle of work hard and play hard may be so entrenched in the mind as the best way to live, that health and well-being are sacrificed. Perhaps they were brought up by parents who were too perfectionist, or maybe there was financial and material deprivation in childhood, to which the hard-working executive image feels like the perfect antidote. Or perhaps this business person has very low self-esteem. On the outside, they may appear <strong>confident and strong</strong>, whereas on the inside, they feel unworthy of good health. Maybe they only feel worthwhile in the boardroom, and so seek to re-create that sense of importance over and over again, to the detriment of their well-being. Or perhaps they are <strong>stuck</strong> in a high-paying job where they cannot go elsewhere, and need that job to pay for an excess of material wealth that they only feel worthwhile if they own. For example, downsizing their job to a less stressful one may mean giving up the five-bedroom house and three luxury cars, without which this person may feel worthless. And although one may not sympathize, after all there are people starving for lack of food, this person is actually in a lot of relentless pain. And they smoke to <strong>dull away the pain</strong>; of over-work, of such a rigid regime, of feeling worthless in themselves, and of impossible expectations.</p>
<p>EFT, short for emotional freedom techniques helps with all the emotional elements of such a<strong> stressful lifestyle</strong>. And when enough stress has been eliminated, the person will then no longer need cigarettes in order to cope, and they can easily quit. EFT involves the stimulation of special stress buttons on the face, hands, and body whilst saying releasing wording. The first step however, still needs to be that of making an appointment with a practitioner. And that is where this person is stuck right now. If that is you, please just for now, make that first step and stick to it. You can be pleasantly surprised how much stronger it can make you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are from a country where people do not smoke on a table in the pub or restaurant outside, it may come as a surprise to go on holiday somewhere like South Africa or Mexico and see people relaxed outside on al-fresco restaurant tables smoking. Or maybe you are in a country where it is acceptable to smoke at tables outside, and it is just a normal part of life where you are. This may be a smoking trigger to you or may be a nuisance, depending on whether you are a smoker or not.</p>
<p>For many ex-smokers and non-smokers, the smell of cigarettes as they walk past can be totally disgusting. And many a non-smoker may wonder if they themselves used to inconvenience others in the same way, with the realization that they must have smelled the same. Of course it is not a matter of smell per se but the stuff that you are breathing in against your wishes that makes it so unpleasant. I live in Cape Town and personally hold my breath when I see that cigarette, and I try to walk as far away from the outdoor tables as possible. But then, I have smokers lung, and I have ended up in hospital once when I had to endure a party where everyone smoked non-stop outside.</p>
<p>For some ex-smokers, the whiff of the cigarettes takes them right back into <strong>cravings</strong>-land. Some people even deliberately breathe it in as the nearest they would allow themselves to get to smoking without actually starting up the habit of lighting up themselves again. Others may notice how relaxed the smokers at the tables look, sitting in the sun with friends, looking happy, and smoking together. That can make the thought of smoking very attractive and relaxing, bringing up those cravings of just one, just here, just this once. Of course, it never is just this once.</p>
<p>However, if you have stopped smoking and still get the occasional craving like that, it is best to release it rather than leave it as a potential time-bomb waiting to happen. There are many techniques you can use, such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), hypnosis, or NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), to name a few. It would be nice to pass those tables and feel neutral, wouldn´t it?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Preparing to do anything is well worth the effort, and this is just  as important for giving up smoking as it is for anything else. And one  important aspect of becoming ready to stop smoking is to have motivation  to start the quitting process. The first step is to remind yourself of  why you want to stop.</p>

<p>It has been found that people are more successful in realizing their  goal if they write down their motivation and put it somewhere they can  easily see every day. So write down your reasons to quit and put them up  on a wall or on your fridge to remind yourself of why you want to stop  smoking. Write down about 5-10 reasons, and when you are ready, you will  find yourself much more motivated to quit. I have listed below some  popular reasons cited by ex-smokers before they quit. Of course, your  reasons may be completely different, but these should  give you ideas to  get you started.</p>
<ul>
<li>Upon hearing from the doctor that you need to quit, maybe because of lung or heart problems.</li>
<li>To  be around for your children and hopefully one day grandchildren. Or to  be around for your partner, nieces, nephews, or god-child.</li>
<li>To set a good examples for impressionable youngsters in your life.</li>
<li>To join your partner in becoming a happy non-smoker.</li>
<li>To be kissed without that disgusting tobacco taste.</li>
<li>To  save money. Think how much you will have saved in a year; what would  you do with that money, go on holiday, buy something you have always  promised yourself, save it for a rainy day?</li>
<li>To be fitter and look healthier instead of sprouting extra wrinkles and yellowing skin.</li>
<li>To be free from slavery to those cigarettes that dictate to you every day what you have to do.</li>
<li>To be free from having to keep going out for a quick cigarette in all those places where you cannot smoke.</li>
<li>To be able to taste your food and enjoy it.</li>
<li>To be fresher and happier.</li>
<li>To be free from that smell on your clothes and in your hair.</li>
<li>To  live a healthier lifestyle. Some people run marathons at 80 years old,  and the average smoker finds it challenging to run up some stairs  sometimes.</li>
<li>To cut your chances of cancer, emphysema, and other nasty horrible diseases you can get.</li>
<li>To live a long and fulfilled life.</li>
<li>To gain self respect.</li>
<li>Better chance of getting a date who is not a nicotine addict or any kind of addict.</li>
<li>If  you smoke at home or in your office, to have your home of office smell  nice instead of like an ashtray, with yellow curtains and walls that you  have to keep washing and painting.</li>
<li>To stop that horrible greying skin look after a heavy night out smoking.</li>
<li>To get pregnant or conceive. Even for men, the quality of sperm is better if the man has quit for 6 months.</li>
<li>To have more energy.</li>
<li>To be free without worrying where your next fix will come from.</li>
</ul>
<p>Now you have the why. Write yours down and put them in a prominent  place. When you are ready, you can move on to the how. My favorite  method that I recommend is Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT for  short. EFT can remove all the reasons why you smoke, leaving you free to  stop smoking when you want to. If EFT does not appeal, there is  hypnosis, NLP, NRT, and many other ways that help you quit.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In NLP and Hypnosis it is a good common practice to model successful people to see what they are doing that makes them successful. And you may well say that these people are successful just because of their genes or because it is them. But you see, it is not that those successful people are better than the rest of us, but that in one particular area of their life that we are trying to emulate, they have it easy. No matter what the rest of their lives looks like, in that one area they achieve success without even thinking about it. Now we need to ask the question: What do those people do to become successful in that area that I can do to become successful too? And you can stop smoking by asking yourself what it is about people who have never smoked and are happy not smoking; what do they do that you can do?</p>
<p>One stop-smoking client answered this question for me very eloquently. She said that her husband, who has never smoked, usually speaks his mind, and sometimes gets angry or sulks, and then when he is happy, he thinks nothing of jumping up in the air or doing a little dance. She was actually not deliberately answering the question of why he was successful at being a non-smoker. She was complaining that he did not keep his emotions under super-tight control! I said to her that this is exactly what she should explore in herself, why she has to appear in control at all times and why she has to drug her emotions with nicotine. I explained that her husband is simply sharing his feelings and expressing himself, rather than forcing himself to keep a tight lid on them, and that is why he does not need a drug called nicotine, as he does not have a need to appear unemotional all the time.</p>
<p>The need to appear unemotional is one aspect of smoking. Sometimes, this need is not an over-the-top unnatural need, but a need to remain in control whilst some pretty scary emotions are threatening to come to the surface. And then, we can ask ourselves, what does a non-smoker do in these cases? Well, they deal with those emotions, so that there is no need to drug themselves with nicotine. Some take medication from the doctor for say, anxiety or depression, some go to a psychotherapist on a weekly basis, and some investigate some great new methods for release, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques, and let go of those overwhelming negative emotions forever.</p>

And some hypnotists are fond of calling smoking just a habit, whilst others may call it a kind of addiction. Every hypnotist using additional modern techniques is finding their own combination that works for their clients.</p>

<p>I feel it is important first of all to address the issue of calling smoking habit or addiction. I have recently been reading up on Habit versus Addiction and it seems that semantics are getting in the way. When I was in my early twenties, a long time ago, it was recognized that there was what was called ¨psychological addiction¨, in other words, the emotional need for a substance. Now, the psychologists do not like using the word ¨addiction¨ it seems unless there was a big ¨physical¨ withdrawal such as in the case of a heroin addict going cold turkey. Now I use the words ¨need¨ or ¨desire¨ to avoid making it just a habit. You see, what a psychologist calls a habit is not what the layman calls a habit. The originator of EFT expressed it very eloquently in one of his DVDs. He said if he had a habit of putting his right shoe on before his left shoe, then that is a habit, and all he needed to change it is put a note by his shoes reminding him to put the left shoe on first, and he would simply do it. But he asked members of the audience, if a smoker can simply stop smoking by leaving a note on their cigarettes reminding them not to smoke, and successfully quit the habit.The audience said no, and he explained that it is because there are emotional reasons why a smoker smokes.</p>
<p>But I am a holistic healer and a scientist and seriously challenge anyone to tell me exactly where the physical ends and the emotional begins and prove it. The problem I find for the client with this arbitrary distinction between addiction and habit is that the client then tries to convince themselves that they need to change habits rather than address the emotional reasons why they smoke. That is, a habit as perceived in layman´s terms, not habit as psychologists call what a layman calls a ¨psychological addiction¨. So then one has to address overeating, and this is because the emotional reasons behind the smoking simply get transferred to another destructive activity, that of overeating. But hypnosis is very popular and lucrative, and no matter what we do to persuade the client to stop smoking from the root, they want the perceived magic of trance and are willing to pay more for it, rather than face their emotions in the waking state and release them relatively faster with EFT. What to do? I mix the two when the client wants. But my heart is warmed every time someone quits smoking from the root and holistically changes their life for the better. Hence my preferred stop smoking solution is EFT and a bit of NLP plus some basic holistic health education. We did it at the London EFT clinic I was running, and very successfully &#8211; it was EFT-only for most people.</p>
<p>Talking about location, I also am finding the local culture has a lot to do with it. For example, in the UK where I started, people were educated by the government not to skip breakfast, and that if they waited till the afternoon to start eating, they would get ravenous and likely to overeat, as well as needing the breakfast to kick-start their metabolism. Here in South Africa, where I now live, most people are totally ignorant of this and many force themselves to go without food till the evening. No prizes for guessing the favourite method of hunger control! Many people think the body does not need food during the day, and so they are ignorant of what hunger actually is, that they call hunger a need to smoke. They have never tried to give their bodies the nutrition it is so strongly asking for. Instead, when they get that feeling that other people call hunger, this type of smoker thinks that it means they have to have a cigarette. This is because cigarettes drug away the feeling of hunger. And this type of smoker is either underweight or is so used to eating one meal a day that they are used to packing it full of energy and do not realize they have to make changes to it when they start addressing the genuine need for eating.Those who were underweight are usually terrified when they start becoming a normal weight. They had been so used to being too thin that they identify as that person. so work needs to be done on the disordered eating, identity, and everything else around it.</p>
<p>This is why I find <a title="How to quit smoking with EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques" href="http://www.stop-smoking-ebooks.com">stop smoking treatment with EFT</a> so satisfying. One holistically heals everything behind the smoking, and when it is all healed, the smoker then simply stops and feels no need to ever smoke again.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I get the occasional client in Cape Town that says they tried hypnotherapy before and it did not work. Then they succeed with me. I would love to take all the credit, and of course sometimes I feel it is due, but let me tell you a story first.</p>

<p>I remember when I first watched a<strong> stop-smoking hypnotherapy video</strong>. It was by Paul McKenna and quite an interesting new experience for me. I loved his voice and the calm images. A colleague was noticing just how bad my health was from smoking and lent me his video. That was way back then in the days when videos were not yet DVDs. Anyway, I watched it many times and enjoyed it, but there was one phrase in it that would always get me out of hypnosis, because I could not do what it asked me to. So I concluded that the video did not work for me and returned it to my colleague. He was <strong>sad </strong>that it did not help, because it had helped him and his partner quit.</p>

<p>A year or so down the line, I had already cut down a little because of my worsening health with a smoking-related disease. Then one day, I was accidentally hypnotized to stop smoking. I say accidentally because it was by a business contact who was talking incessantly about the contents of the Alan Carr book, the Easyway to Stop Smoking, all this whilst the drink was flowing. So he managed to somehow get the message to my <strong>unconscious mind</strong>. I continued to smoke straight afterwards. But the next day when I ran out of cigarettes, I went up to the counter with my purse wanting to buy them and found that I could not. I opened and closed my mouth like a fish and no words came out. I left the shop an ex-smoker.</p>

<p>Years later when I became a stop-smoking practitioner, I was making small talk with a colleague whilst waiting for my next client. She asked what I did and then said “I I tried hypnosis once to stop smoking but it didn&#8217;t work.” I expressed my<strong> surprise</strong>, because she was a non-smoker. Then she explained that about six months after the hypnosis, she decided all on her own just to go <strong>cold turkey</strong> and succeeded.</p>

<p>So what happened there? What really helped us to stop? Well, I have my own opinion. Call it a <strong>hunch</strong> or an educated guess. I think that video I had first watched must have put some great <strong>suggestions</strong> in my unconscious mind. All I then needed was an extra push. That was it. I am now amazed that I had already cut down but did not put any of it down to the wonderful video I had watched! And I think that the colleague who quit “cold turkey” also had all those suggestions in her mind from her hypnosis session. And somehow after six months, something finally <strong>clicked</strong> for her and she was able to quit.</p>

<p>The more I think of it, the more it makes sense. That hypnosis that we first had <strong>did </strong>work. It just did not work when we <strong>wanted</strong> it to. A healing journey is just that; a journey. And the path to success is not always as straightforward as we want it to be. Sometimes we need to be on that path for a little longer than we first expect. And that is perfectly OK.</p>
