Most people in Cape Town take a number of sessions to quit smoking, unlike my UK clients, who usually stopped in one session. This is because there are more factors tying a Capetonian to smoking. So we are left with a dilemma. A smoker who wants to stop smoking needs some reassurance that the methods are working. But the methods are chipping away at the smoking in each session rather than releasing it all in one. So I have come up with a reduction plan, which is becoming increasingly popular. At the end of each session, I would sit down with the client and agree a maximum number of cigarettes a day that they felt they could cut down to, giving them the confidence that their treatment was working.

However, although most now ex-smokers on this plan have done very well, some smokers came back discouraged that they could not stick to the plan. The problem was that the reduction was determined by the the clients’ subjective wish to succeed, want to save money on sessions and cigarettes, and need to be in control. It was not an objective assessment of the state of mind of the client. It usually was perfectly spot-on and worked, but when it did not, that was not good enough for me. I started doing kinesiology-based muscle-testing to objectively find root causes of the clients’ smoking desire, and that was both full of great revelations to the client, and it was also a great way to go beyond denialism, the greatest block in any smoker’s path to recovery. Once the smoker was face-to-face with what their mind-body was clearly saying, they owned it and worked with me to let it go. This was a great success. And then, I thought why not use the muscle-testing for an objective measure of the reduction that is right for each particular ex-smoker-to-be?! Well, I am pleased to say that it is working a charm.

Kinesiology-based muscle-testing is a way of using a muscle to tell us objectively what is going on in the mind-body. This ranges from pathogens to food intolerance to emotions. Muscles used for this bio-feedback mechanism are usually in an arm or leg. The muscle chosen gives two types of feedback; strong, and weakened. “Marcelle” (not her real name) came to see me in my Cape Town treatment studio for stopping smoking. At the end of her session, I wanted to know how many cigarettes she could reduce to. I was concerned, because we had a holiday coming up when she had to wait longer for her second session that I would have liked. She smoked 15 cigarettes a day when she came to see me, so I was worried about gauging this correctly. The muscle-test came up with a strong muscle when she repeated “I can easily reduce to 12 cigarettes a day”. And so we used this number for moving forward. Had we not used muscle-testing, Marcelle may have tried to cut down further, only to end up disappointed. This way, we knew what we were dealing with.

The target of 12 a day had indeed been successful. And then Marcelle’s mother made a very abusive visit, and Marcelle turned to cigarettes as a way out of the distress. So we treated this, and at the end of the second session, We tested for number of cigarettes again. 14 Gave a strong muscle, as did 12. At 11 cigarettes a day, the muscle started to wobble, and at 10, the muscle lost its strength. So we agreed to cut down to 11-12 a day until the next appointment.

At the next appointment, I was delighted to hear that not only was the 11-12 a day target realistic, but it was even bettered. The reason why was that Marcelle had tapped during a mother visit where her mother was again being abusive. Marcelle told me that she asked herself whether it would be better to tap and look silly or smoke and feel defeated, and she decided to tap. And so she was able to remain strong and even exceeded our expectations. If you are not familiar with tapping, this is a revolutionary new self-help and practitioner-application method called EFT that can help make you stronger. At the end of this session, we muscle-tested again. A maximum of 10, 9, 8, and 7 cigarettes a day all gave a strong muscle. The muscle started to wobble at 6 cigarettes a day and went weak at 5. And so we set a target of 6-9 a day.

After this, an unexpected ongoing disastrous situation happened in Marcelle’s life which the muscle-testing could not have predicted. We then changed the treatment to one of disaster management rather than forward progress. When the situation finally stopped, Marcelle went back to the program with a plan of 7 cigarettes a day. We then kept reducing till Marcelle reached zero number.

The muscle-testing made a big difference in showing Marcelle what her subconscious mind really wanted. This is because you cannot truly stop smoking unless all parts of you are in agreement. And many a smoker who is unsuitable for a one-session stop smoking program wants to fool themselves that they will stop in one session, and then they feel hopeless and ashamed when they fail. This is not to say that many smokers quit in one session. Many do. Of course they do. However, in high-stress places like Cape Town, where Marcelle is, most smokers need a bit longer than one session. And this is where muscle-testing can really help the person move forward. When the smoker literally sees their subconscious mind speaking to them, they do listen. It is a very powerful tool indeed.

She is now a non-smoker too! More→

“Marcelle” (not her real name) quietly handed me her progress sheet today with nothing on it. She said the reason it was unfilled was because she had not smoked! Yes! She has now been smoke-free for a week! I am absolutely delighted, and she is very proud of herself.

When I first met Marcelle, she did not want to stop smoking. But since seeing how easily her relatives stopped, she asked to see me. This is what is so poignant about this case. Her relatives stopped in 2-3 sessions, but she needed longer. Had Marcelle come for treatment without knowing how easy it was for them, she would have probably given up giving up, like many others do, if they find out it is going to take longer. They do not understand that it is a personal thing and start blaming the process, the practitioner, anything that the hooked mind will direct the anger and frustration at. Anything, that is, except the real causes. But Marcelle trusted the process that she had seen work for others. She realised it was a personal thing, and everyone goes at their own pace. And she is a non-smoker now.

There was big theme running in Marcelle’s sessions. This was a childhood full of abuse from her mother. Now, before you think of psychology, banish that thought from your mind. Think energy healing. The problem with most talk therapy is that you talk about the problem, bring it to the surface, making the wound raw again, and not be able to do anything with it except get insights and try to get used to it. With energy healing, we simply release the energy disruption, or energy imprint, left by the traumatic events. This does for some people bring up traumatic memories of counselling or psychotherapy. If you suspect this may happen with you, and you are going for EFT energy healing treatment, then simply let your practitioner know that you have this problem. Then, they can work on releasing the trauma of going through psychotherapy out of your system first. Anyway, luckily, Marcelle had not been through this kind of trauma, and so we were able to go to this energy disruption and chip away at it session by session. After the 14th session, enough of it was gone, and Marcelle became a calm non-smoker.

Two important things happened in the 13th and 14th sessions. One was that we worked on some of the things her husband did which reminded her too much of her mother. And so we released that connection and the attached pain. Another is that I suspected the smoking was stubbornly refusing to go because Marcelle was undergoing a tough time with her child who was mixing with the wrong crowd, and she could not cope with the stress on her own. I wondered if this was a way for Marcelle’s subconscious to bring her back to see me for healing. And so I tapped on her as I said that she does not have to smoke to see me, and I would be more than happy to see her to support her through this difficult time. I really do not know for sure about this factor, but I treated it anyway, in case it may be a secondary gain. And today, Marcelle came to see me for just the stress-release, and it was great to see her face beaming with pride as she announced her success!

I will be continuing to see Marcelle for as long as she wants to. It certainly is cheaper and healthier than cigarettes! I am also helping her to re-gain her health after all those years of smoking damage. Well done, Marcelle. You hung on in there and refused to give up. And you are a big success. Thank you so much for your story.

We worked in this way on the second children incident which triggered the second spike in Marcelle’s smoking. We got both of them down to about a zero. I then set Marcelle a new target of 2-5 cigarettes maximum a day. She happily and calmly accepted this new target. I gave her another progress sheet to fill in, and we had a pleasant conversation as she was on her way out. She is always relaxed after these sessions, and they are helping her to be a stronger and happier person overall. I love this added benefit of working with EFT. It strengthens you from deep within.

As well as EFT, Marcelle enjoyed a massage on this occasion. As a complementary health practitioner trained in the UK, I also do Deep Tissue Massage. Marcelle reported back pain when she walked, and so I gave her a back massage to start with. It only took 20 minutes of our session (my sessions are about 90-120 minutes each), and she reported much better ease of movement afterwards. Many thanks again to Marcelle for providing this case study so that others can benefit. you can follow Marcelle´s story on here. She will happily stop smoking completely. And I am so confident of her success that I am publishing her case study as it evolves.

When “Marcelle” (not her real name) first came to see me, she was smoking about 15 cigarettes a day. The day before her 9th session, this was down to 7 a day. And now, after a few weeks’ stalemate, she has succeeded to stick to her last reduction plan, which was 9 cigarettes a day. Each cigarette represents negative emotion. We have been releasing plenty of these, and now, finally, the number is less than half what we started with. Marcelle was very proud.

If you have been following this series of articles, I am also pleased to report that the disastrous happening in Marcelle’s life is now over. The EFT we did has clearly helped her through it, as she has simply bounced back to her usual cheerful self now.

Whilst Marcelle’s relatives had quit with me in 2-3 sessions, including her husband, she does understand the benefits of going at her own pace, and that this is OK. Marcelle reported that she feels she has grown and developed through this healing journey. She has become a stronger person and feels different. This is what happens when you quit smoking using EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques, otherwise known as Tapping. It is truly a journey to freedom from many negative emotions, so you feel lighter and calmer as a result.

We started Marcelle’s session with kinesiology-based muscle-testing. This is a biofeedback mechanism that gives information about the body and speaks with the subconscious mind. The testing revealed an imbalance in neurotransmitters on the left part of her brain. We proceeded to treat with a 635 nm cold laser.

Next came the emotional stuff underlying the smoking. I tapped on Marcelle as she verbally walked me through her average day’s smoking, from start to finish. Her voice became strained and her shoulders looked stiff when she came to one particular part, so we stopped there for tapping. The situation was teaching her grandson and helping him with his homework. The grandson insists that his teacher’s way of doing things is the right way and will not consider any other approaches that Marcelle takes. The desire to smoke after this homework session started on a 9 out of 10 intensity. Marcelle said that after all that, she needed a treat. We began tapping saying statements like “Even though I need this treat…” and “Even though I don’t want to deprive myself of this treat”. The intensity reduced to a 6 out of 10. And then I tapped on Marcelle something like “Even though he insists his teacher is right, at least he is respectful of his teachers, and that’s a great attribute than many kids don’t have”. Marcelle agreed, citing a story with one of her daughters, and how she did better when she learned to like her teacher. But still, Marcelle was unhappy about this teacher adoration, so much so, she still wanted that cigarette. I asked her if there could be a parallel in her own childhood and life where her mother favors her sister all the time. She agreed and saw the connection straight away. So we released this block with Inner Child tapping, and Marcelle no longer desired the after-homework cigarette. It was a zero intensity.

Marcelle then carried on walking me through her smoking day. We came at a point which I know from experience to be relevant. This was a cigarette smoked with a favorite close person. The person in question was her aunt, let’s call her “Auntie Nelly”. We started at a need to smoke with Auntie Nelly of 6 out of 10, which went down to 5 after some tapping. I kept tapping on Marcelle as I asked her if this aunt is like a mother to her, since her mother was abusive and not like a mother. Marcelle agreed, and we tapped on all aspects of this, until finally, the desire was about a zero, and Marcelle could see herself happily just being with Auntie Nellie as she alone smoked. The bond keeping the two so close together was love, and there was no need to cement it with a cigarette.

Lastly, we tapped on one more daily cigarette, and moved on to the muscle-testing. 7 Cigarettes a day tested strong, and 6 and 5 a day were weaker, so we set anew target of 7 cigarettes a day. I look forward to our next session!

“Marcelle” (not her real name) is seeing me for stopping smoking. I have previously helped some of her relatives, and she wanted to stop smoking with me. She had tried before on her own and lasted about one day. She is now on my reduction plan, where we reduce smoking until she stops. This is a plan that works very well for smokers in Cape Town, where the pressures of life mean that quitting in one session is a rare possibility. This is unlike my home town of London, where most people could easily stop in one session. In Cape Town, I now use EFT tapping and Kinesiology-based muscle testing for treatment and accurate gauging of the reduction plan, and the combination works like magic. I am really delighted that Marcelle gave permission to write her stop-smoking journey, so that others can know just how easy and complete this combination can be.

The third session went off to a great start. Marcelle had reduced her smoking even further than expected. The reason was that despite a huge challenge which would have sent her straight to the cigarettes, she was able to remain strong by doing her homework! This was a simple adaptation of EFT tapping called rant-and-tap, where you tap on favorite or emergency points over and over again whilst talking or thinking about what is bothering you. This was Marcelle’s mother being abusive, and Marcelle handled the situation very well. I also think that treating some of the mother root causes had taken a good chunk of the reasons to smoke out of Marcelle’s energy system, leaving her stronger overall. Marcelle was justifiably proud of her achievement as she told me how she decided to tap as soon as she needed to, thereby being able to overcome what was a strong urge to smoke.

We then started looking for smoking triggers. I asked Marcelle to imagine she is looking at a DVD of her life, going back and forth in time, until it reached an incident or a time where she felt like smoking. This was after a meal. I asked her where she was in the DVD and who was with her. She said she was in the lounge on her own. So we tapped on that scenario, using wording like “Even though I have this after eating cigarette desire…” as well as what I call Ericksonian EFT, where I tell a thought-changing hypnotic story as we tap. The desire went from a 6 out of 10 to a 3 to a 2, where it stayed. Sensing that probing further was not appropriate, I decided it was good enough and moved on.

Next, I asked Marcelle about her smoking desire at a forthcoming social event. It was a 3 out of 10. I tapped with her on all aspects I could think of, but then she suddenly said that it was the car journey where she saw herself smoking. We had only just started to tap on that when out tumbled a surprising root cause. Marcelle had been in a terrifying car accident some 20 years or more previously. So we tapped on all the points whilst she told me about the car accident, so that we can release it from her system gently. I kept asking her questions about it that she had to answer, all very gently of course. And at the end of that tapping, the desire to smoke in the car was under a 1 out of 10. All very good!

We then tapped on the smoking desire when Marcelle got up in the night. This went from a 7 out of 10 to a 4 to a 2. We used wording such as “Even though I need this night cigarette…” and mentally walked through the processes we tapped.

And finally, we muscle-tested for the minimum number of cigarettes Marcelle could easily have, and this turned out to be 6. So I gave her a target of 6-9 per day to aim for till next time.

“Marcelle” (name changed) is on a reduction plan to stop smoking for good. The way it works is as follows. Every session, we release as much as we can of the reasons behind the smoking. We are doing this with EFT, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Techniques or Tapping. Then we do an objective assessment, with Kinesiology-based muscle-testing, of how many cigarettes we can comfortably reduce to. We are doing this all the way to zero, and progress so far is successfully on track. I am indeed grateful to Marcelle for letting me write her story. It is written soon after it happens. This way, you can tell that it is real.

On her second session, Marcelle announced that she had indeed stuck to our agreed reduction plan for about 3 days. Then she struggled to cope with that number all of a sudden. I thought that was strange, because we had muscle-tested for accuracy in determining that figure. So I wondered what went wrong. Marcelle seemed very ashamed of herself and very despondent because of this. After further gentle questioning, Marcelle revealed what had really happened. Her abusive mother had visited around Day 3 and proceeded to deeply personally insult Marcelle’s teenage daughter, being very abusive and totally freaking out. Marcelle tried to verbally defend her daughter, but her mother carried on with the tirade of abuse. I asked Marcelle whether in the light of this information, it made sense that she was stressed and needed to calm herself with a cigarette. She agreed. We then started the tapping.

We started tapping on something like “Even though I have this feeling about when my mother came over and freaked out…”, interspersed with just tap-and-rant. Tap-and-rant is when you just tap on all the points you use whilst telling about what happened. This event came down from a out of 10 to a 4, and then a 2. We then tapped on all the points as started to figure out solutions to protect Marcelle from her mother and her children from their abusive grandmother. We came to many ideas, some of which Marcelle has successfully put in place after this session (I write this after our third), and as a result, Marcelle did very well with her reduction plan after this session. Next, I asked her for a time when her mother was abusive to her, maybe in childhood. Marcelle came up with a time when she was 12 and her mother accused her of stealing an item of jewellery and called the police to take her away. The police took the 12-year-old child away for questioning. This was in the old South Africa, so I can imagine this was not a gentle experience. The police believed Marcelle and called the mother to come and take her back home. Afterwards, the thief was found, but not reported, and Marcelle did not receive an apology either. This event started at an intensity of 7 out of 10, and with some inner child work, we reduced it to a 1. We then re-visited the recent mother freaking out incident, and Marcelle said it was now simply a “bright light”. She was peaceful.

We then muscle-tested for emotions and aspects that weaken Marcelle where cigarettes were concerned. We came up with Rejection and Sleep problems due to a hypothalamus challenge. We tapped for both, and then we muscle-tested for number of cigarettes to cut down to. This was 11-12 a day, and Marcelle was able to even reduce further, because she carried out her homework brilliantly! This was simply tap-and-rant!

In the next article in this series (which in most browsers appears just above this one), I tell you how Marcelle exceeded our expectations and how the third session revealed an interesting twist to the need to smoke in the car.

“Marcelle” is seeing me for stopping smoking. We are doing a gradual cut-down plan, which is great for smokers who have a large emotional element to their smoking and therefore cannot stop in just one session. To do this, we do as much treatment as we can fit into each session and assess at the end how free Marcelle is, cutting down accordingly. This is a relatively easy and pain-free process.

We are carrying out the treatment using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and kinesiology-based muscle-testing and treatment. EFT involves stimulating the end-points of certain meridian energy lines whilst using releasing wording. Muscle-testing is based on kinesiology techniques, and is a fairly accurate diagnostic tool for determining the state of mind of the client. EFT is my method of choice for releasing the underlying emotions to the urge to smoke. The muscle-testing helps me determine how successful we have been in an objective way, so than we can then plan the next step forward. EFT gave Marcelle a great deal of calm in this session. Like any other healing modality, EFT sometimes results in a gentle release, and this time the release was with a few tears, but this soon went away, and Marcelle was left with feelings of peace and calm, and desire to move forward. She had seen how a relative had released with laughter when they attended their sessions, and so she knew she was safe and protected in her session. Although EFT can be self-applied, I find that tapping on clients whilst they are lying down comfortably is gentler for big traumas. And Marcelle had given me a big trauma behind her smoking urges. We approached this very gently, and in this session, I chose to only take the edges off it, so that Marcelle would be thoroughly comfortable with the process. But before we approached this trauma, we worked on a general fear and on an innocuous specific smoking issue. This was to help Marcelle ease into the treatment and feel happily confident about it. So, in this session, we made good headway with three emotional root causes:

1. The fear of stopping smoking.
2. Overeating, which was kept at bay with smoking.
3. Childhood trauma of physical and emotional abuse.

Marcelle reported a fear of stopping smoking of value 10 out of 10 before we started. So I started with “Even though there is this fear of stopping smoking…” and peppered it with statements that made it comical, like “Oh my God, what am I going to do” in a funny tone of voice, which also helped Marcelle feel more at ease. We then took a detour to tap on overeating. I started by tapping “Even if you didn’t smoke, there is the fear of eating more, you can deeply accept yourself anyway”. We tapped around on this theme, and then I asked her if she did not smoke, what would she most likely binge on? She said “Luxury”. I asked her which luxury, to which she replied “Wholenut chocolate”. This immediately implied a need for luxury, rewards, a treat, and feelings of deprivation. So we tapped on all those. And we tapped on “this Wholenut chocolate desire” too. The chocolate desire went from a 5 out of 10 to a 2 and ended at about zero. After that, the fear of stopping smoking was down to a 5 out of 10 – half its value just 20 minutes previously. Next we started working on the trauma. Marcelle had said that she was the black sheep of her family, always blamed for anything and given hidings. I asked her how upset she felt when I said “black sheep of the family”, and she said 5. We tapped very gently on this statement and it went from a 5 out of 10 to a then a 1. We used gentle EFT with some inner child work, helping the young Marcelle feel good about herself, exonerating her from blame and taking her to a safe nice place. After that, the fear of stopping smoking was a 3, although we had not worked directly on it again. I explained that this was because the childhood trauma was a root cause of the smoking, and that by releasing it, we can move forward with ease. At the end of the session, we used muscle-testing to objectively determine how many cigarettes a day Marcelle can cut down to. This was 12 a day, 3 less than usual. I gave her a simple EFT tapping to do on the Karate chop as homework, and we set the next appointment.

Read on in this series of articles to see how Marcelle is doing. These are written as they happen, so that anyone who is looking for help can know that they are real, genuine treatments. Whether you are looking to stop smoking, or if you are a stop-smoking practitioner, I hope this article has given you useful ideas. And many thanks to my lovely client for permission to write about her case.

EFT is a great way to release the emotional (otherwise referred to as habitual) components of smoking gently and effectively. Short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT involves stimulating easy-to-reach acupressure points whilst repeating a releasing phrase. EFT is best performed in the waking state, where you are fully awake, and you remain conscious at all times. Kinesiology-based muscle-testing is a remarkable tool where the muscles in an arm or leg are used for bio-feedback from the mind-body. Using this bio-feedback enables a quick and far-reaching conversation with the unconscious mind that you can experience in the waking state. This in turn enables a fast and effective negotiation with the unconscious mind that enables you to break past barriers to success and move forward towards your goals. More→

“Marcelle” saw her family benefit from EFT tapping and Kinesiology-based muscle-testing and treatment. She was interested in stopping smoking using these techniques. And I am delighted that she has graciously agreed for me to write about her treatment so that others can benefit from this powerful combination. I am writing about “Marcelle’s” treatment as it unfolds, so you know that it is for real.

Marcelle was a 15-a-day smoker. In my experience, this implies deep emotional reasons for smoking. A 20-a-day or 10-a-day smoker tends to smoke one packet and when finished, simply have to stop for that day. There are packets of 20 for most smokers, which supply enough cigarettes to fit into the hours available normally for smoking. And the packets of 10 are usually used in Cape Town by those who cannot quite afford a packet of 20 and have to ration their cigarettes to last. For someone who is more physically than emotionally addicted to contain themselves and not smoke the 5 remaining in a packet of 20 is very unusual. And so, I was not surprised to learn that underneath that strong exterior, there was some past turmoil for Marcelle to release.

Marcelle had been the black sheep of her family of 7. She was blamed in childhood for whatever went wrong, and then given a hiding for it. She had recurring lower back pain in the coccyx or SI joint area, which in terms of energy healing means the need to let go of issues, an insecurity, and the need to belong or feelings of rejection. It transpired that the latter was indeed the case, as she had been picked on at school by snobbish children. The pain has been more prevalent in just over the past year without any obvious physical cause, which suggests that something emotionally significant has occurred just before a year ago. Marcelle also has had a few health scares in the past year or so, including a benign breast cyst, as well as challenges with blood sugar levels and high blood pressure for a couple of months. The health scares also indicate some emotional stresses at the time. Luckily, family members with problems that may have contributed to this stress have already been successfully treated, but it is something to watch out for anyway, in case Marcelle has any residual stress from that lurking about in her energy system.

Armed with information, we proceeded with the first session. We treated mainly one general issue from childhood, in order to reduce its impact on the need to smoke. We then determined that is was good to proceed with cutting down to 12 cigarettes a day, I gave Marcelle simple, non-triggering homework to do, and we happily arranged our next appointment. I predict that Marcelle will be mostly able to stick to the 12-a-day agreed reduction, and that we will be able to reduce this further next time. She knows that her treatment will not be as fast as some relatives’ treatments and is happy with waiting. Mostly, this is because she knows that everything will proceed at a pace that is very comfortable for her, and that it will be easy for her to succeed.

Using this bio-feedback enables a quick and far-reaching conversation with the unconscious mind that you can experience in the waking state. This in turn enables a fast and effective negotiation with the unconscious mind that enables you to break past barriers to success and move forward towards your goals. Thank you, Marcelle, for providing this case study for the benefit of all.

Are you going through the quit process? Maybe you have stopped smoking just a couple of days ago, or perhaps it has been a bit longer. If you are experiencing some difficulty and looking for support, read on…

Maybe you started the day feeling fine but then got totally stressed out when you found out there was no coffee in the jar, or the train taking you to work arrived late, or there was an accident on the road causing you to get stuck in traffic, or any of a myriad of small annoyances that suddenly seem so overwhelming. It is as if now, you not only have to face not smoking on a morning, which may have been your most needed time to have a smoke, but you also have to deal with this stuff! Perhaps you have turned into a monster at work or with your family, and everyone is either giving you a wide berth or secretly wishing you would pick up smoking again. How did it get to this, you may ask, and what can you do about it? How do you cope with all this?!

The good news is that this scenario is only temporary. You can go outside or to the toilet and scream, shout, punch something or cry; do whatever you need to do. But do not under any circumstances give in!

You will manage to get coffee, get on the train, get through the traffic, or whatever other blocks there were in your path, tormenting you. This torment will eventually become a minor annoyance. You are going to feel better, so get yourself back on track. You can get through one crave at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time, and it does get better.

Everyone gets bad days. This includes non-smokers. But when you were smoking, those bad days were anaesthetized by the nicotine. The only difference now is that you need to find another way to feel calm while you adjust to your new, smoke-free life.

Alternatively, you can get help in order to calm that monster which is trying to come out at any minor annoyance. Or at least, you can seriously quieten that craving down to a whisper or even total silence – peace. Yes, you can do that, and most people can calm a craving in a matter of minutes. There is a little-known technique called Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT for short. It is a little-known method because it is relatively new. EFT has been developed in the 1990s and is revolutionary in that it cleverly combines the physical with the emotional in a simple way that can easily be self-applied, bringing relief in as little as a few minutes. It sounds too good to be true. I know, because I myself resisted it for a long time, thinking it was just nonsense. How can anything work so fast, I thought. Well, it really can. If you need support to handle your quit with ease, try this strange and new technique. You may find it a great boon.

Stopping smoking can be done in one session or it can be a longer process, depending on your individual reasons why you smoke. I am not talking here about the reasons your conscious mind comes up with; these are just excuses. Rather, it is the unconscious reasons that make all the difference. And whether it takes one hour or three months, the result is the same. It is the end result of freedom from smoking that you want and that it is wise to remain focused on.

Typically, a smoker reacts to everything by lighting up a cigarette, even if not aware of doing so on a conscious level. Happiness or sorrow can both lead smokers to smoke. Anger or irritability lead to finding comfort in smoking. And so a smoker becomes closely associated with smoking and everything revolves around smoking. Once determined to quit, it is best to learn and understand the reasons behind the urge to smoke and respond by releasing them. Four powerful reasons behind the urge to smoke are hunger, anger or irritability, loneliness or boredom, and tiredness or lack of concentration.

Hunger is a natural language that your body uses to communicate with you a need for nutrition and should not be satiated with cigarettes. One must take proper meals to avoid hunger rather than skip meals or eat less than the body requires. But that is physical hunger. There is another kind of hunger, which is an emotional hunger, and this is the main reason why some ex-smokers put on weight after quitting; to fill the emotional void that was previously satiated with cigarettes.

Anger or irritability is another important cause for urge to smoke. In other words, you have been smoking your anger away instead of finding a way to release it, and now you have the opportunity to start letting it go. Once the main sources for anger or irritability are released, you will find that you feel much better as an ex-smoker.

Loneliness or boredom is another strong driver for the urge to smoke. That cigarette can be a supportive , loyal, non-judgemental, and interesting friend.

And finally, tiredness or lack of concentration is another driver behind the urge to smoke. Maybe you have just finished one task at work and need to get in the frame of mind for the next. Or perhaps you have been driving for a while and need to be alert.

These are just a selection of four reasons amongst many why people smoke. Each reason is powerful enough to convince your conscious mind that you need a cigarette. But your unconscious, or inner mind, is actually after something else. By listening to your unconscious mind and releasing what is behind the urge to smoke, the urge can simply go, and you can be free to become a satisfied, calm, comfortable, and successful non-smoker.

A virus caught along with 5 other students at university at the end of 1986, plus medical negligence, meant that I got smokers lung at a relatively young age. In desperation for help with my symptoms and quality of life, I turned to complementary therapy, and I have outlived one doctor’s prognosis by many years now.

I am now a complementary therapist, author of the Stop Smoking E-book at http://www.stop-smoking-ebooks.com and trainer specializing in energy healing.
