I get the occasional client in Cape Town that says they tried hypnotherapy before and it did not work. Then they succeed with me. I would love to take all the credit, and of course sometimes I feel it is due, but let me tell you a story first.

I remember when I first watched a stop-smoking hypnotherapy video. It was by Paul McKenna and quite an interesting new experience for me. I loved his voice and the calm images. A colleague was noticing just how bad my health was from smoking and lent me his video. That was way back then in the days when videos were not yet DVDs. Anyway, I watched it many times and enjoyed it, but there was one phrase in it that would always get me out of hypnosis, because I could not do what it asked me to. So I concluded that the video did not work for me and returned it to my colleague. He was sad that it did not help, because it had helped him and his partner quit.

A year or so down the line, I had already cut down a little because of my worsening health with a smoking-related disease. Then one day, I was accidentally hypnotized to stop smoking. I say accidentally because it was by a business contact who was talking incessantly about the contents of the Alan Carr book, the Easyway to Stop Smoking, all this whilst the drink was flowing. So he managed to somehow get the message to my unconscious mind. I continued to smoke straight afterwards. But the next day when I ran out of cigarettes, I went up to the counter with my purse wanting to buy them and found that I could not. I opened and closed my mouth like a fish and no words came out. I left the shop an ex-smoker.

Years later when I became a stop-smoking practitioner, I was making small talk with a colleague whilst waiting for my next client. She asked what I did and then said “I I tried hypnosis once to stop smoking but it didn’t work.” I expressed my surprise, because she was a non-smoker. Then she explained that about six months after the hypnosis, she decided all on her own just to go cold turkey and succeeded.

So what happened there? What really helped us to stop? Well, I have my own opinion. Call it a hunch or an educated guess. I think that video I had first watched must have put some great suggestions in my unconscious mind. All I then needed was an extra push. That was it. I am now amazed that I had already cut down but did not put any of it down to the wonderful video I had watched! And I think that the colleague who quit “cold turkey” also had all those suggestions in her mind from her hypnosis session. And somehow after six months, something finally clicked for her and she was able to quit.

The more I think of it, the more it makes sense. That hypnosis that we first had did work. It just did not work when we wanted it to. A healing journey is just that; a journey. And the path to success is not always as straightforward as we want it to be. Sometimes we need to be on that path for a little longer than we first expect. And that is perfectly OK.

Muslims in South Africa have been told to quit smoking because of fears of contamination of cigarettes with pig produce and alcohol. A halaal products organization, the South African National Halaal Association, or Sanha, made the claim in mosques and via the Internet.

Sanha stated that “Muslim Jurists have for a long time condemned cigarette smoking.” Now that makes plenty of sense. Having read the Quran from cover to cover in Arabic, I have no doubt that if the prophet Muhammad were alive today, he would forbid the smoking of cigarettes.

Now Muslim-owned businesses are being urged to stop selling cigarettes. I think this is also sensible. How can a God-fearing person possibly knowingly sentence people to a slow and painful death? How can a Muslim pray five times a day and then go to his shop and sell cigarettes to a pregnant mother, for example?

And how can any dutiful Muslim wash and take care of their body as prescribed by Islam and then go and put the many poisons from smoking cigarettes in their body? This not only makes no sense but is a great hypocrisy indeed.

Whether cigarettes contain pigs’ blood or rum or wine products should be irrelevant. As a matter of fact, any doctor would agree that there is far worse in a cigarette than any minute amount of pig or alcohol product can possibly be.

South Africa’s largest cigarette manufacturer, British American Tobacco SA (Batsa), naturally denies it all in a report in the local Cape Argus, a local newspaper in Cape Town. However, what the cigarette manufacturers cannot deny is the thousands of deaths and illnesses their industry regularly causes. Cigarettes are the leading health concern in South Africa after HIV/AIDS. And that is not in dispute by anybody, regardless of their religion.

So if you are a Muslim smoker, what should you do? Do you wait to find out if there is indeed pig and alcohol additions to cigarettes? Do you find a way to quit in the meantime? And what if you quit and then find that cigarettes are free of these things. Do you then take up smoking again, fully aware of the other, and one may argue, more serious health risks?

Perhaps Muslim or otherwise, we were given a body to look after with love and respect. I was taught that we were created in God’s image and that we are the creation of God. How sad that so many religious people then go on to desecrate this great gift of our body by regularly and systematically abusing it with toxins from cigarette smoking.

If you are a smoker and any of this resonates with your beliefs, for God’s love, quit. There are many good ways to help you quit smoking wherever you are. You may find that to stop smoking is the greatest show of gratitude you can give to God. And in return, going through the process in a responsible and healing way can bring you spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally closer to God and closer to a life of true contentment.

U.K. Regulator Warns About Chantix and Suicide

There’s a new development around Pfizer’s smoking-cessation drug Chantix and suicide: The United Kingdom’s drug regulator has issued an update linking the medicine to reports of “depression and suicide related events.”

Documents posted by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency give the following advice: “Patients who are taking [Chantix] who develop suicidal thoughts or who develop agitation, depressed mood, or changes in behaviour that are of concern for the doctor patient, family, or caregiver should stop their treatment and contact their doctor immediately.”

What I’d like to know is why give a drug addict another drug instead of just removing the reasons for the drug addiction? In my experience, that is far easier, less costly, and more beneficial to the recipient. Cigarette addiction is like any other addiction, and the main causes are emotional, even if you don’t realize that at first. Now there are simple and relatively painless ways to removing those pesky negative emotional blocks in your path, and you could do it from as little as one session. Time and time again, in the stop-smoking session, my client and I reach a point where there is no cigarette craving whatsoever, and this continues the next day, and so on. Surely if cigarettes caused a physical addiction, this would not be the case? And for every client convinced that this was a physical phenomenon, I was able to show that by removing the emotional element, somehow the physical part went away. So why have a dangerous physical intervention? It makes no sense. I am certainly not anti-drug and definitely not anti-pharmaceuticals, as everything has its place. It just is not in my experience that a stop-smoking drug is needed.

Yours sincerely,

Question

You mention qualifying for the 1st session; what does that mean exactly?

Answer

My hypnosis is not one-formula-fits-all. It is tailor-made to suit you. When you first see me, we sit down and I fill out a Client History Form. I ask you many searching questions that help me determine whether you are suitable for the one-session route or whether I should advise that we should work more through the underlying issues first. If, like the majority of overseas clients, who have far less daily stress to contend with than Capetonians, you qualify for the one-session route, then we keep working until every situation I put you in, on a scale of 0-10 of smoking desire, there is negligible desire. This we determine in the session itself, so there is no guesswork. Otherwise, you are best on the 6-session plan, with some being able to quit in 3 sessions. We will know when you come for your first session, and there is no need to make a decision before then.

Question

And the sessions after that is only if I feel the need to again ie a craving returning?

Answer

If at the end of the first session, you have say a smoking desire of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc in any one situation, then I schedule another session for you. We then make a pact for you to smoke a lower number of cigarettes that is achievable, and cut down further in each session until you have totally quit in relative comfort. Remember, there is no guesswork with my method. You know exactly where you are.

If for any reason, we get it all down to a negligible level but either you or I miss a situation and you experience that situation afterwards, then you simply call me to schedule another session. The most common thing that goes wrong is sudden extreme stress, like a home that literally collapses, loss of a loved one, loss of a job, or illness, which can be so stressful, that the ex-smoker picks up a cigarette in a moment of weakness and becomes an addict again (all it takes is one cigarette). I say it is the most common, however it is very unlikely – it happens to only about 3% of my clients.

Question

I am in Cape Town for two days, and I wanted to see you. When we had a brief chat on the phone last week, you told me that I was in the minority of smokers that need nearer to the full 6 sessions you offer in your scheme, rather than the one session. Now I don’t know what to do, because I live too far to travel each week for a session.

Answer

Whilst it is true that most people prefer to see me for the first session, I do have clients all over the world who do treatments with me on the phone; some even in Cape Town, who simply prefer not to drive to me after a long day’s work. Some weeks I even do more sessions on the phone than in person. You can attend the first session in person. We can even have a break, re-convene, and carry on. Time is not the limit in my sessions, so you can relax about that. Then we can schedule more sessions over the phone. You can easily hold the phone whilst going into a state of relaxation.

Since starting NewAgeTherapies in Cape Town, I have had visits from various places, including Mozambique, Cameroon, Gauteng, and the USA.

Question

I am not sure if I am hypnotizable.

Answer

Nobody becomes unconscious in hypnosis. That is purely a myth, perpetrated by dramatic hypnosis shows, where, incidentally, the participants do not become unconscious either. I guarantee you 100% that you will not become unconscious. It will not happen, so do not expect it. Hypnosis is just a slight state of relaxation, which for some people is deeper.

The depth of relaxation or trance has absolutely no bearing on the results, so you do not need to worry about how deep you can go.

Children are hypnotized whilst they are still playing, wide awake, and moving about with their eyes wide open. Being awake does not mean that the hypnotic messages are not going into your subconscious mind.

I use at least 3 techniques in my treatment. Hypnosis is just one of them, and not necessarily the most effective, although it is the best-known. You do not even need to have hypnosis in the first place. So if you have any worries about hypnosis, rest assured that you do not have to have it. All you want is to stop smoking. The purpose of the exercise is not so that you get hypnotized, but so that you stop smoking, right? If I help you stop smoking, even if you did not feel hypnotized, does it matter? Of course not! Focus on what you want. What you want is to stop smoking.

Question

Why do you want me to release the reasons behind my smoking? Can´t you just make me hate cigarettes or forget about them? Surely that is what hypnosis is about.

Answer

If that is what you want, then don´t come to me, because in my experience, that can have unwanted side-effects; whereas releasing the underlying reasons to smoking I find a better long-term option. My initial hypnotherapy diploma training in the UK was to find the root of the problem and help the client with that root cause, or those root causes. It is far better than just treating the symptom, and this is why. I have seen clients who have stopped smoking elsewhere by pretending smoking is just a habit without reason, and they developed a number of problems that may be even worse than the smoking was in the first place. For example:

Depression that suddenly appeared from nowhere mysteriously just after stopping smoking, including feeling suicidal.

Bulimia.

Addiction to narcotics such as cocaine or tik that, again, suddenly appeared from nowhere mysteriously shortly after stopping smoking.

Because these people stopped smoking whilst denying that there were good reasons why they smoked, they did not solve the original problem they had in the first place. And so they developed another problem that replaced the smoking. Better to resolve the reasons why you smoke, and then you can be truly free.

Question

I keep thinking in terms of an hourly rate. This seems like a good deal, up to 6 sessions and 5 years. Please explain.

Answer

It is strange for South Africa, but eventually many hypnotists will be doing it this way. In other countries, it is normal to charge per result for hypnosis or hypnotherapy rather than per hour. I am from such a country (UK) and I find that South Africans like this new way of charging, because it is fairer. Payment is upfront at the very beginning.

Remember, you get Hypnosis, Kinesiology-based muscle testing and Laser, and EFT, an Advanced Hypnosis package that is totally unique, using my skills and experience for a version tailor-made for your requirements. For your success.

Pubs and restaurants in Beijing were supposed to stop smoking. Then there was a big uproar and China had to allow smoking in the end, despite the Olympics.

Clearly this was a PR exercise that failed. But the point is, most people do not associate athletics with smoking. Just like you would not associate healthy living with smoking. Put it this way, if you were to choose a new doctor, would you feel confident choosing a doctor who smokes? If you were to visit a hypnotherapist, would you feel assured of the outcome with a hypnotist who smoked?

Although smacking of Big Brother, it does actually make sense to stop smoking in restaurants and bars, I have just come to Cape Town in South Africa from London in the UK. In Cape Town, smoking is allowed in bars and restaurants. Some restaurants make an attempt to make a non-smoking section, the rare coffee bar is non-smoking, but most bars and restaurants frankly stink. In London, smoking was banned in all public places last year, and it is a pleasure now to go out for a drink or a meal. There was initially much worry about going smoke-free. Businesses were worried about losing custom. However, in the UK most people are non-smokers now, and so this was a great deal easier.

And despite the health risks, in Cape Town, just like Beijing, there is a need for a drug. Nicotine happens to be a perfect drug. It calms you when you need calming, wakes you when you need to be alert, is easily delivered into the body, and is legally available.

Smoking is a coping mechanism. Smoking takes the not-Fun out of life and the smoker is left with Fun. Smoking takes the not-Happy out of life so the smoker is left with Happy. Without smoking, the smoker is faced with a great deal of not-Fun and not-Happy, and life is very grim indeed. People need to be healthy. However, they also need to be happy. Sometimes being happy is more important than being healthy. Why should it matter if you die early of cancer or a heart attack, if you have lived a happy life? And who actually wants to live a long and miserable life?

This is why nicotine replacement and various wonder pills alone fail. When the smoker is given ways to be naturally happy, such as with EFT, hypnosis, or meditation, then they can finally be calmly free from smoking. And when a nation is healed, when it becomes stronger from within, you get smoke-free restaurants. It really is a holistic matter.

China has a great deal of trauma from the past, as does Cape Town. The pain of the people needs the balm of nicotine. I sincerely hope that one day, this pain will release. With this release, there will no longer be a need for cigarettes. And then China can rest assured that its bars and restaurants will be smoke-free.
